Sorry, folks, the New Beetle is not German. It's completely Mexican made.

Shhhh, it has a German "spirit"!

Oouuh "spirit" - if the "spirit" shall be a reason, than a Porsche 356 has to be Austrian.

wasn't there already a discussion for this car how it's a custom 1998 New Beetle coupe that's been converted to a convertible? I think it was this movie and Austin Powers.

I cannot really agree. The New Beetle as created in the U.S. for the U.S.market. In Germany it was never popular - because it's a lame try of a remenisecnce of the Käfer-cult. Damned to be a failure from the first minute. You cannot create a cult-car intentional. The reputation to be a cult-car must grow up from itself.

The very first 3 New Beetle Convertibles, our local VW-dealer has sold at the first day of the presentation were back after 3 days and the first rain-shower - the roofs (made by Karmann do Brazil) werent rain-proof.

My japanese friend owned a New Beetle, than a New Beetle Convertible. Both with quality-problems, too. I like to make him mad and pissed, by pointing out the orign from a country, which is on the way up from the Thirld World: "Hey, what's up with your round-shaped Hindustan? How many Yen you have paid now for fixing your two-door Proton Roadster?
At least: "Your father's Mercedes 190 from the 80ies breathes more spirit -not just German, more classic one- becaus it was made in the former Borgward-factory in Bremen."

I don't want to offend anybody, but while I've seen Beetle horrors I've seen the same amount of horrors in German VWs. Volkswagens just aren't reliable these days or too well put together. A reliable Volkswagen is one that is made in a country "on its way from the COMECON", i.e. a Skoda.

BTW, Mexico is "second world" at the very least.

Indeed the New Beetle probably does not have so much German "spirit" compared to other VWs...

@Bravada: it's not an offend for me, it's a fact, that several high reputated "Made in Germany"-cars have quality-problems. But this is not an actual problem.
Let's give some examples:

- a lot of complaints about the Golf V. But I remember that there were also complaints, when the Golf IV was issued. And I also remember a friend, working at a VW-dealer, which was mad about the brand new Golf - the Golf III

- a lot of customers weren't satisfied in 1996 with the new Mercedes E-class "the W 124 was much better" - I remember also a demonstration of taxi-drivers, who made a star-shaped convoi the the Mercedes factory. It was in 1986 - with the brand new W 124

- the A-class starts with a worst-case-disaster, the "elk-test". My father shortly bought one of the last A 210 from the 1st. generation. His neigbour, a Mercedes-mechanic told him "Avoid the 2nd generation, they have quality-problems"

- the ADAC-statistics says since yearsm that the Opel Omega B, especially the 1999-model, espeically the Diesel, has the mostest defects of all upper-middleclass-cars (since the Scorpio is gone). I own a 1999 DTI with 216 000 km - one single breakdown I had.

- a colleague had more breakdowns with three brand new C-classes in three years than me with ugly old cars (1984 Audi 80 and 1987 Passat within 8 years)

- big Citroen had always a bad reputation, because of the bad reliability. Last week my wife's uncle said: "I'm driving Citroen since 33 years, first a CX, then a XM, now a C5, without any single litte breakdown"

Last but not least: my Japanese friend also has bought in 2003 a new Polo "Made in Bratislava". He was not satisfied either due to some defects. But the Beetle's were worse.

Fake movie license plate. According to the Calif. smog test site a '01 New Beetle does have this plate combination. It doesn't say if it is a convertible.

There are a couple details that reveal this is not a factory convertible:
- the band at the top of the windshield is too thick
- there is no chrome trim along the window sill
- the convertible top does not sit right when collapsed

A '01 New Beetle with that plate was last tested in 2011. Bascially it was a fake plate for the movie. In real life a '01 Beetle has that combo.

So...it's a coincidental registration?

I imagine that the owner was inspired by the film.

It can't be a 2001 anyways as the convertible wasn't out until 2003 - I don't know why marioman keeps saying it came out in '01.

Custom built 1999 model as a convertible.
