The Bible of US imports does not list these as available in US in any form (2.0 or 2.4, spider or coupe) but has several passing mentions each year 1966-72 and a strange description under the 1969 Fiat range of failed attempts to get the various versions to comply with emissions regs. Which doesn't make a lot of sense if Ferrari could achieve compliance with the same engines. So I guess Fiat wanted to sell them but got cold feet for some reason and that there were some below-the-radar "grey" arrivals in this to-ing and fro-ing, perhaps explaining why The Bible gives them such coverage. No sidemarkers, so either this one was a very "grey" arrival or a pre-68 car. |

I was wondering about this as well. I can't find anywhere on the internet about Dino Spider's history in the US, it's as if they were never sold there in the first place ![]() |

I know the story because my father worked for Fiat at the time. The Dino was planned to race in a sector that needed a mimum ammount of built units and this was a problem for Ferrari. The answer was to build a second version (The first being the Dino 207 GT, later 246 GT) badged as a Fiat in coupé and Spider bodies. The agreement said that the Fiat versions should never be sold in the USA that was the most important and prestigeus market for Ferrari. And this was. Howewer some American visitors bought here in Italy Fiat Dinos and brought them to the USA. My father himself sold personalyy in 1972 one of the very last 2400 spider in Bright Red to a very friendly US officer who was at the time the highest US Army officer in Sigonella, Sicily. Regrettably h could not have in standard USA trim as the previous ihis own 124 spider was. He was so grateful ti my dad that he invited all of us to the haedquarter more than once. In 1997 during my first visit in San Franscisco I saw passing in Columbus street a Juniper green series I coupé with California plate but obviously European trim. |
