Understood. Though that seems a little odd.

Not so odd taking into consideration difficult relationships of many Eastern Block countries with Western Germany. They started to change only in 1970s. I guess it maybe could be related with that.

EDIT: On the other hand on linked page sergej is saying that there were UK Fords only since 1970s, so OK - there could be different reasons.

A bit odd it is: Ford was and is an American make, and the USA were actually not in fantastic relationships with the easern block.
Left Hand drive Cortinas were a non sense as the same as the German built Taunuses.
I can see in this movie Opels and Mercedeses. The first is in the same situation of German Fords: it is a German plant of a big US company.
Mercedes was German 100%. So, why Opels and Mercedeses and not German Taunuses ?

I don't have details of dates or announcements, but have the strong impression that there were trade deals between UK and CS governments every few years, with UK makers invited to bid for contracted supplies of batches. Rootes presumably won some, so CS got lots of Minxes end of 1950s into early 60s. Then Ford won the next bid, so Minxes stopped and Cortinas started; this would explain why there are no S5 Minxes in CS, nor earlier UK Fords such as Anglias. Maybe later there was a contract for supplying Chrysler 180s?? Also perhaps something similar for 1950s Humbers in PL???

Guessing even further, UK was a fairly open market, but maybe a mirror existed in the trade deals to give Skoda easier access to UK (reduced or zero tariffs or whatever) to explain a strong presence here during 1960s?? Also noted that by mid-late 70s, Ford UK had been absorbed within Ford Europe, so the British flavour of these deals would have been diluted.

Dunno, but I have a clear recollection of the family across the road buying a new Skoda Octavia in late 1961 or early 1962. The proud owner wrote a letter to Motor Sport, commending the car as being, iirc, a Hillman Minx sized car for the price of a Morris Minor!

It was also fitted with front seatbelts, which made a big impression on me as it was the first car I had seen with them.

Post meeting note: the plate was OBF xxx which was Staffs CC, July 1961.

59 year old memories! Now where did I put the TV remote?

From what I know, only UK built Fords were officialy imported to CS starting with Ford Anglia in 1957, because UK was polliticaly more acceptable than West Germany in those times. But it doesn´t mean, that there were no German built ones, because there were, although not strong as for example in Poland, private imports, so it was possible to see a small amount of Ford Taunus (mainly from 60s) on CS roads too...my grandma´s friend owned since 1973 a second hand 1965 Ford Taunus 17 M (two door, yellow with black vinyl roof), which was imported in 1970 by the previous CS owner as an inheritance from his old aunt living in West Germany. He owned this car until 1990, then he sold it to Soviet soldier, who after some vodkas crashed with it to a tree near the road the same day.

The letter referred to above, copied from my March 1962 edition of Motor Sport magazine. I see that my memory did involve Hillman cars of some sort, but a protracted conversation in Motor Sport ran on for a while, and several letters.

That's not a happy owner. Edited for a horizontal read.
