This car was the No. 1 Ford GT40 fielded by the American Racing Team; Shelby American driven by British driver; Ken Miles and New Zealand co-driver; Dennis Hulme. The No. 1 was one of the three Ford GT40 that crossed the line together with McLaren and Amon's No. 2 GT40 and the American Holman & Moody No. 5 GT40 driven by American driver; Ronnie Bucknum and co-driver; Dick Hutcherson. As Miles' No. 1 GT40 and McLaren's No. 2 GT40 crossed the line together, Le Mans officials declared that McLaren's GT40 was a little bit further over the line than Miles' GT40, declaring McLaren as the winner. After Le Mans, Ken Miles was later killed during high speed test run on the new Ford J Type at the Riverside International Raceway in Riverside, California on the afternoon of the 17th August 1966. The J Type flipped and crashed before shattering into pieces and ejecting Miles from the wreck, Miles' son; Peter Miles was there and saw the crash. Miles' death was the second death for the Ford Motor Company as American racecar driver; Walter Hansgen died of injuries in a hospital at Orléans, France on the 7th April 1966. Hansgen was conducting a high speed run in a Holman & Moody GT40 Mk II for the 1966 Le Mans Race on the 3rd April 1966 during a heavy downpour when he lost control and crashed into a barrier. It was believed that Hansgen tried to gain control by driving up onto an escape road but was unaware of the barrier built across the escape road. -- Last edit: 2020-03-20 01:29:31 |
