No, it was an extra (nowadays for a cutted-off-roof with an original "Golde"-sunroof the Beetle-freaks are paying a lot of money), but obviously it was often ordered by the police in that time. Also Cabriolets, even with specially made bodies, were used by the German police in the 50ies. Probably for observations they preferred an open roof. For this reason, the police, but more the German "Bundespolizei", the former "Bundesgrenzschutz" (border patrol) always have ordered a lot of VW Buses (from T2 to T4) with the extra large sunroof. VW-freaks are very keen on, to buy these Buses, when they were sold in used condition by the authority - this big VW Bus-sunroof costs f...ing much money, when you order it for a new Bus. Also, a lot of these border-patrol-VW Buses have side-doors right and left, which is usually rare. The reason for two back doors is also, that the policemen can jump out on both sides. |

I'm still puzzled by the rear window... It looks like the bigger window introduced in August 1957, but it doesn't fit with the rest  Was that a Polizei-specialty? |

I understand what you mean, but I think it must be an illusion created by the light or something else, since the side window seems bigger too. Nevertheless, the shape of the rear vents it's not from a big rear window car. The engine lid, the size of the windscreen, the position of the rear lights, etc., all exclude the possibility of a 1958 model year car. |
