The Excursion is not what I would call 'eye sore' ugly, it’s just that it looks like a Ford F-250 Super Duty (which is the vehicle the Excursion was based of off) with a rear camper shell. Ford didn’t make any extra effort to dress the back of it up. In fact, when the Excursion was secretly being tested by Ford before its final release, Ford disguised it as a F-250 Super Duty with a camper shell, they painted lines to make it look like the rear top was separate from the vehicle’s body. I would rather have the F-250 Super Duty than the Excursion. The new 2007 Ford Expedition EL is much more civilized than the Excursion and is the Excursion’s replacement. |

Good points, thanks for the information. |

The Excursion looked more like a small bus than an offroad vehicle. |

Was that thing any good offroad? And when I say good, I don't mean something that can complete mild offroad courses. It's the ratio of ground clearance to body length that makes me suspect it would get stuck easily. |

It could go off road, but its length, factory stock tires and weight hindered it somewhat. You are forgetting that this is basically just a Ford F-250 Super Duty, so its ¾ Ton spec transmission, drive train and suspension can withstand severe brutal punishment and not fail. The Excursion was not built wimpy. It was quite a toque monster if equipped with the top-of-line extreme duty 6.0 Liter Navistar Power Stroke® Turbo Diesel; making a massive 560lb ft of torque at just a mere 2,000 rpm. They can be easily modified to better enhance their off-road performance. However its overall size can be a bit troublesome while off-road. ![]() |

That's what I think when I see these huge American SUVs, some of them look too big and cumbersome to be an ideal offroader like the Land Rover. I could easily see the Excursion getting stuck at some point, because of it has a fairly low ground clearance in proportion to it's lengthy wheelbase. Although size doesn't always matter, these big trucks like the Mercedes Unimog are supposed to be good offroad vehicles. But even the Expedition looks like it's size could be a hindrance (keep your answer short please ) -- Last edit: 2007-10-03 23:04:22 |

Sometimes you type whole essays, so why can’t my answers be long? |

Sorry man, I know I type long posts, most of your posts aren't very long anyway, it's just I thought you might bombard me with loads of technical information. Most of the detailed info you post about the Expedition doesn't really mean much to me, I don't know what things like "TRITON" and "4R75E transmission" mean. I'm not a technical expert. -- Last edit: 2007-10-03 23:28:34 |

Anyway I probably shouldn't have mentioned the Expedition, we were talking about the Excursion. |

Plus, we already know about your dislike for SUVs ![]() |

I just have far too much good taste to like SUVs ![]() |

That was a joke by the way ![]() Anyway I wasn't talking about my dislike for SUVs, I was only wondering if an SUV of the Excursion's proportions was a good offroader, and Neptune replied that it wasn't the best offroader, partly due to it's size and weight. -- Last edit: 2007-10-04 02:24:34 |

It's not as much a 4x4 like a rock crawler as it is a 4x4 that can handle deep mud, broken ground to a certain degree, ditches, etc? What it is VERY good at(in either 2wd or 4x4 form)is towing very heavy trailers!!!! |

I understand G-MANN, don't worry By the way, I support Neptune in his sometimes long comments. He still provides relevant information, unlike certain other members... |

I found a spy photo of a secret Ford Excursion test-mule for you CCF. It shows the back of it was made to look as if it was a Ford Super Duty with a Camper Shell. |

Thanks Neptune, interesting, from about when do you guess that photo could be? ![]() |

That photo was supposedly taking in 1998 at Ford’s (not so secret) secret proving grounds. I believe Brenda Priddy took that photo (she is known as a avid automotive spy) There are more spy photos of the Excursion that were taken even earlier than that one. These (the ones shown below) show a very rudimentary test-mule with a UN93 Expedition rear end. That rear end was scrapped and later test-mules featured a rear end more similar to the production version. -- Last edit: 2008-03-30 17:57:19 |
