The name was not Golf ESV but VW ESVW II or even just ESVW II (the ESVW I was a completely different car design, ESVW of course means Experimentier-Sicherheits-Volkswagen) It was a 1975 The ESVW I was rear-engined, fuel tank up front, but still had features like anti-skid disc brakes (ABS), tightening by pressurized gas of knee (!) and (automatic) shoulder belts, for all occupants, a "silent co-driver" (adjusting the steering to compensate for wind and road conditions) and green (!) taillights (with red stop and amber turn signals) Teh ESVW II carried over many features but was a modern water-cooled FF layout, like the Golf itself |

Episode aired in June 1974. Unless their prototypes followed the early model year turnover format, I suggest to leave as 1974. Also says here that it was shown at the Experimental Safety Vehicle Conference between June 3rd and June 7th 1974 (the conference that this episode was about). I think there must have been more than one prototype, however, as the "museum piece" is in a different colour. |

A little off-topic: Start of Golf production was the spring of 1974, indeed (some say February, some May, I think March 29 seems like trustworthy, precise date) In sale, available to consumers from May, but ESVW may even have been based on pre-production models It's the Mustang story all over again - there was no MY1974 Golf, so also there should be no ESVW II, but the term model year is another discussion. Please leave as is, if you like. (I can't find pictures to prove it, but you should not find one out there with 174xxxxxx chassis number. Try mekonomen.no, search for parts for a Golf and you will not find 1974 mentioned here) |
