No, and I'm surprised to see these headlights on a Jaguar in the USA (Massachusetts, actually). They would be normal in the UK and Europe, but because of the US's insistence on sealed beams quad headlights were normally fitted to US-bound exports, as in the main pic. Some home-market models had quads as well. |

No? I am surprised because I thought they illustrated the difference between the european and US spec lights or maybe I just didn't say what I meant. However, I think that has changed because my cars of the last 10 years or so do not have sealed beam lights. Oh I'm sorry, I did misunderstand you.  But the car in your link is a 1991 model, and I'd have thought sealed beams were still obligatory then; indeed when the XJ40 came out that was the only reason for a quad-headlight setup. As I indicated, I have seen home-market XJ6s with quads, but I think that may have been introduced as an option later. |

well I still don't understand meaning of "The way the headlight reflects oncoming light." - does he think taht this car has 4 reflectors, so it is an US version? If yes, that is wrong, because lots of later XJ40s in Europe have quads as well. I believe no Jaguars were fitted with selaed beams (maybe excluding the XJ-S with quads instead of one ovale light..) |

Poor wickey, I'm not sure I understand that phrase either. What I was getting at in my little chat with wrenchhead was as follows: (1) I thought that quads were fitted to US-market XJ40s because sealed beams were compulsory in the USA at the time. (I still do, although http://www.ellisimports.com/photos/UCD600Full.jpg seems to prove me wrong.) If you remember, several European cars with non-round headlights - several Mercedes, Peugeot 504s, for example - were fitted with quads for the US market. (2) Yes, plenty of British and European market XJ40s have quads, but I thought this was an option introduced later. Is this any help? |

I do understand, but I saw plenty of XJ40s in US movies with regular rectangular lights... examples: /vehicle_28908-Jaguar-XJ-XJ40.html /vehicle_9465-Jaguar-XJ-XJ40.html /vehicle_40108-Jaguar-XJ-XJ40.html etc. etc. On the other hand, we have quads in Europe also. So the fact, that the car has rectangular or quad headlights says us nothing about the country it was delivered to.. And I believe quads were introduced in about 1990-1991 just as an option |

The Sovereigns, Vanden Plas & Daimler models have square headlights, the lower spec models get twin round lights. Thats anywhere in the world. The only difference with the US market lighting is they dip to the right(for left hand drive markets), they have side markers in the bumper sides(which are just reflectors in the rest of the world) & they dont usually have rear fog lamps in the rear bumper(although states that do get fog may have had them). However many owners replace the square units with the twin round ones as they look more "Jaguar-ish" |

This one has early wheels, probably before 1990. Has extra chrome, but even plain ones were often blinged up for US. As for the lights, outside US/CDN, comments are correct that 4 lights was XJ6, and rectangular was posh versions - Sovereign, Daimler. But in the years since those exchanges we have a better grasp of US/CDN scenario, which is again 4 lights for normal XJ6, but also early-mid years of their posh versions (Sovereign, and Vanden Plas as their Jaguar-branded equivalent of Daimler). But late in XJ40 lifespan, compatible rectangular lights with US regs were fitted on Sovereign and VdP which we think was 93-94. So for US/CDN: 4 lights - all XJ6, early-mid Sovereign and VdP. Rectangular lights = 93+ Sovereign and VdP. |
