On the "taxi" sign it is written "Taxí" (with an accent on the "i"), does anybody know if there a reason for it? This is in Montréal, but in French it should be written "Taxi" like in English

Maybe it's a way of showing the 'Frenchness' of the taxis Taxi is written the same way in English and French, but the stress is different. Sort of hypercorrection?

But a accented "i" does not exist in French, it makes more Italian... ("Tâxi" or "Tàxi" would be more "logical" then :D)

Could it be something else -- a sticker, a logo, etc?

In Italian it's 'Tassi' with the stress on 'a'... 'Táxi' in Portuguese, 'Taxi' (or 'Taxímetro') in Spanish... ???
