Americans are not the only ones...many nations have to add lights, change bumpers, license plate brackets, or so on to meet various jurisdictional requirements. I can't help but notice American cars in European films tend to have extra flashers mounted high on the fenders, or random amber extensions on their rear light clusters.

Ingo ◊ 2011-07-19 21:57	To go the extra mile: not only optical, also technical US-versions are worse than the European and Japanese originals. The 70ies had been the worst times, but it didn't really became better until now. For enviromental laws -expecially the Californian- US-spec cars are often/mostly extremely curbed. If you make the direct competition, you'll get tantrums. When the $ is low to the € (as in the last years), many classic cars were shipped from the USA to Europe. Clueless buyers becoming upset, appreciators are swearing about downgrading this annoying stuff.

HunterMan ◊ 2012-06-10 05:45	Referring to the thumbnails of J.R.'s car that Stronghold posted back in '07, those are of his first dark green Mercedes, which is the 280SE...and not the actual car-pic here. Are we sure this Mercedes (I think what was and/or is called a Reseda-Green) is also a 280SE? In other words, Stronghold's pics and the actual car pictured here are not the same Mercedes, and that's why I was wondering if both were 280SE's? Also I think this would be closer to a 1978 or '79 model.
ath20wj ◊ 2014-07-01 06:17	Alright, here's the thing with JR's Mercedes. He had more than one. The first season (The pictures stronghold posted) used a 280SE Mercedes in a darker green color. The second season ALSO had a 280SE, but in that lighter pear green color. The third and fourth season he had a 450SEL in the same color as during the second season. Basically, as the show got more popular, the more money they had to use for production, the more expensive Mercedes JR could drive. Just like Bobby's SL. He had a 450SL with red wheels, a new 450SL with alloy wheels, a 380SL, 560SL...

And its not "Americans", it is the manufacturer Daimler-Benz that made said changes. Local laws needed to be met that were not part of the design process, so the result was perhaps less-than-desireable to the original poster's eyes. Honestly, I overlook the federalized bumpers myself and as I am used to that design from the ones on US roads at the time, I actually like them.
