Could well be Fangio testing the BRM at Folkingham in early 1952. CTL 17 was a 1947 issue in Kesteven, Lincolnshire so local to Folkingham, and to BRM in Bourne.

"CTL 17 - A brilliant Alfa Romeo SS Guilia seen in this old photograph. The number plate had been displayed on about 10 Bentleys since 1946 before being registered to this vehicle. '17' is one of the owner's lucky numbers and a plate like this would certainly make most people feel lucky."

"CTL 17, the Mark VI pressed-Steel saloon, now occupying my garage at Bourne, is the tenth Rolls-built Bentley I have operated." - from "Cars I Have Owned" by Raymond Mays, BRM's founder. So the boss's car, but the quote comes from a 1950 article so possible that it was newer replacementby early 1952.

Yeah, I should have mentioned that it's the same scene as /vehicle_1144414-BRM-Type-15-1951.html

Are you ready?

CTL 17 appeared upon the following chassis: -

MkVI.

B432DA. Oct 1948 Dark blue.
B222FV. Nov 1949 Dark blue
B195GT. May 1950 Midnight blue
B70KM. Feb 1951 Midnight blue

R-TYPE

B199TO. May 1953 Midnight blue
B83UL. Oct. 1953 Midnight blue

Creature of habit?

All with Standard Steel Saloon coachwork, and all registered to Raymond Mays and Partners Ltd.
No knowledge of any later Bentleys operated by RM. He is probably the man standing nearest to the camera.

So has to be [B70KM] in 1952. I wonder why he changed them so frequently - could he make loadsamoney selling them on during post-war restrictions on availability of new cars?? The advantages of privilege for captains of industry??

Mays died in 1980, my Bentley Drivers Club membership lists only go back to 1982, and the only references to him between 1936 (I have an index covering Review issues 1-180) and his death are an announcement of his death in BDC Review #104, and an article about his Derby Bentleys, which is in Review #67, some time in 1963, and my copies only go back to Review #75, January 1965.

My knowledge of the car market in UK at that time, gleaned from old copies of the Autocar and the Motor, suggests that if he did not make money out of his Bentleys, he certainly would have owned and run them for free.

http://www.thehodgkinsons.org.uk/ERA-RaymondMaysSpecial.htm I see we don't have one of these in the database yet.

Mays also owned at least two pre war Saloons by Park Ward on 3 1/2 litre and 4 1/4 litre. He had favourable terms with Bentley to always be seen in the latest model.
