Why flagged as an American car? It was built by Austin in England, almost exclusively for export. Underneath it was purely Austin mechanicals.... |

Well, it was still an US-designed car |

Well, since it was pure rubbish, I'll let you have it ![]() For those who don't know about this particular car; it was designed by Nash to be produced by Austin (then England's largest manufacturer) and was outwardly a miniaturised Rambler. It used Austin A35 or A40 mechanicals, which, at the time, were already out of date. Built for export only at a time when the Export-or-Die restrictions had well gone, it did not live up to expectations. After three or four years it was offered on the home-market in a modified form when it gained an opening boot (trunk) instead of having to stuff luggage behind the seats. It was not a success here either, though nowadays it has an ardent following - much like the Austin Allegro I guess. There is a phrase to describe those who worship cars like the Allegro and the Metropolitan - silly buggers.... -- Last edit: 2007-07-03 02:38:57 |
