Am 99% convinced it's a Wartburg with 1971+ black grille. But that 1% won't shut up.

 is it LHD? The person (driver?) sits on the left side. If the plate would be identifyable, we would know, if it's a Knight or a -probably more rare- COMECON-tourist's 353.

My mate's first car was an orange one in the mid 70's so they were around in UK RHD form.
His next car was a Triumph Stag and then a Porcshe 924 ! :)

I know, that the Wartburg 353 was exported as RHD to the UK, I mean this specific car, if it's a UK-spec Knight or a tourist's 353,

Impossible to say anything about the plate apart from long format and white, so UK reflective or German or F/CH/etc all possible. Scrolling through onscreen, both front seats are occupied. So UK Knight is best assumption, but nothing to disprove it.

I thought all UK Wartburgs were pale Blue/Grey? At least that's the colour of the 3 or 4 that the local dealer managed to shift.

It was 'Jaffa' orange without a doubt :)
Other ones around here were a 'sludge' beige !

[:heink] "sapphire blue" in 1971 - who had it first and who faked it - VW or Wartburg?

 for sure the colour was not named "Jaffa"
- the DDR always had been Anti-Israel due the brotherly friendship to the PLO
- oranges were only very rarely available in the DDR, and if yes, it was ugly inferior stuff from Cuba.
