I now know that this bike is definitely a 650 and dates from 1963, the first year of unit construction and the first year of the single downtube frame. Black and silver were the standard colours that year. It has been fitted with more modern forks, brakes and headlight. This bike probably started life as a 6T Thunderbird with a headlight nacelle and a 'half bathtub' rear fairing. Most of the Triumphs sold new in the US in the late 1950s and early 1960s came with various forms of the bathtub fairing but these were usually removed early at the request of the customers who preferred their bikes naked. Call it a 1963 Triumph Thunderbird. |
