Definitely pre-war DB-chassis, and looks to be a Tickford. -- Last edit: 2020-04-24 17:35:59 |

I wonder if it's FGJ 865, March 1939 DB18 Tickford (chassis: DB18-1-46123), supplied to King George VI and a good selection of googled pop-ups, including 1997 auction notice and lots of recent online photos. According to this sale notice for another DHC (FGF 718, 1938 red, Salmons body) "We are told there were just 23 chassis made, but just 5 cars built due to 18 being lost during the war (factory bombing). We know one was used by Churchill for his election bid and King George VI also had one brand new. There is certainly an interesting history attached to these cars.". Churchill's EKV 881 was a different body with part enclosed rear wheels. So that's 3 of the 5 pre-WW2 DHCs identified - no idea about the other two (if they still survive??). All other googled DB18 DHC selection have post-WW2 plates where these can be read, and/or other obvious differences (colours/body etc). So, with FGJ 865 being fairly active recently for being seen and photographed in various situations, seems the right colour scheme and other details for our picture, it must be a strong candidate?? |

It has the 'CAB 318' registration as the 1938 Daimler New Fifteen Salmons & Sons [DB17-1] in 'The King's Speech' -- Last edit: 2020-04-25 16:07:54 |

Twenty-three chassis allocated for DB18/1 DHCs and eighteen of those destroyed is a myth. Without trying very hard: FSM85, FGJ865, FGF718, EKV881, & JM5982 are five DB18/1 DHCs that survive today. There was only one known to be bodied by Carlton Carriage Co. (EKV881; 49531), with most of the others being bodied by Salmons & Sons, some with the "Tickford" winding hood. -- Last edit: 2021-08-13 22:08:09 |

As an aside: although FGJ865 is often quoted as having Salmons & Sons "Tickford" coachwork, the coachwork is Daimler's own. Fit for a king indeed. |
