'Explorer' written without a trim badge under it indicates XLS trim. Also the gray piece above the *hatch* handle is 2003+. All 2002 models have a body colored *hatch* handle; even on the XLS and examples are below. This is a 2003-2004 base model. Although I suspect it is a 2003 only as I cannot see a door badge present. In 2003 when Ford introduced as a separate trim level the XLS Sport that is when the badge disappears on the tail gate for base XLS models.
