Location: Friedrichstraße. The goldsmith Stoess on the right was founded by Wilhelm Stoess in 1886 after spending 10 years learning his business in Paris. In 1890, Russian Tsar Nicholaus I. ordered a brooch from Stoess. In 1928, his son Walter Stoess took over the business, but since he refused to join the NSDAP, his store was closed down by them (it must have been not long after this was filmed). The Nazis even confiscated his business, but the family managed to hide a part of their creations in the outskirts of Berlin and another part was disguised as soap and smuggled away from the Nazis. In 1946, the business re-opened in Wiesbaden. |
