The accident that De Portago and Nelson were in occurred five hours into the race, and it was a fatal one.

According to the race reports, De Portago and Nelson were 40 miles from the finishing line at Brescia when the front tyre exploded at 240km/h, causing the vehicle to lose control and hit a telegraph pole, sending the vehicle over a brook on the left side of the road and back over the brook and into the crowd.

As a result, both De Portago and Nelson were killed along with nine spectators and another 20 were injured.

Of the nine who were killed were five children of which two were killed by a concrete highway marker that was ripped from the ground by the impact of the vehicle.

De Portago's body was found near the wrecked vehicle, severed in two.

The accident had resulted in the Italian Government to ban racing on all public roads.

Well they didn't really ban all races on public roads just this one -admittedly the most difficult to police and control due to the distance. The Targa Florio went on up to the mid 70s.
