i believe my friend that jag was working on this car in the early 1980's and late 1980's they stopped in the early 1993 because change of plans. it was called the XJ41 for the convertible and the XJ42 for the coupe. it never ever made it to production. -- Last edit: 2007-02-16 16:37:00 |

XJ-41 was indeed a project cancelled by Jaguar but I think some time before Ford took them over. It looked somewhat similar to this and the front end had covers over the head-lamps. I worked on the electric motors for the covers in about 1985-86. I would say Jaguar developed their own styling for XJ-41. I only ever saw a single XJ-41 convertible body-in-white and never a completed car. The pre-production tooling had been completed and four prototypes were being built when I got involved. I don't know the exact details but I was around when it was found that the windscreen header-rail was too low with the seats installed. The only solution was to re-design the floor-pan (which I guess was based on the XJ-40 pressing). The cost of doing this and the time to make or modify tooling must have been big problem and within six months I heard nothing more of the project. |

As a Jaguar enthusiast, I`m glad they didnt do it! it looks like a cross between a 76 & 85 Corvette with a Jaguar-ised front bumper! And what sort of downforce would that front end have? Its not a design classic... the XK180 on the other hand... |

Its not a design classic... the XK180 on the other hand...[ mate the final cars looked very beautiful and not ulgy like the one u see in the pic they were very pretty cars but if u look at a aston martin DB7 u can see the XJ42'S lines the final and well put toghter cars are in the daimler jaguar heritage trust mueseum they only get released when a jaguar show is around. so i suggest u go to a jaguar show and see them before the show is over because it's very rarley that u do see the well put toghter prototypes in motion or up close. |

I just get in this forum and I red the interesting posts by Jag involved people and, in someway, I was involved too because, actually, I'm who penned the styling of the 1978 Pininfarina XJ S then my intervention has to concern the styling only. I would like to underline that it was 1978 when XJ S was designed (we cut and reduced the original XJ platform)and the target was to make a sporty Jaguar trying to bring the E TYPE styling image back as the brand sporty design language which was completely lost. I regret that the image shown here on the top is not the most exciting one but, at that time, also the Jaguar chief designer was very enthusiast of that model which has to be considered as the seed of the new products design direction. To answer to some just emotional expression "exploded" in his post: styling is a matter of personal taste and always think that people has "worked" in "something" then, just to respect people's work, it is not that much polite to judge as "ugly,bad".......and similar, critics to be disclosed and shared has a different concept. http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/34/jaguarxjspider7399.jpg/ Concerning downforce............the "design full model" was tested at the Pininfarina wind tunnel, as we usually did in the early design stage of ANY new design and the XJS had Cx o.28 (penetration coefficient) with positive downforce.
