johnfromstaffs ◊ 2015-04-26 23:11	You are wrong in your assumption of irrelevance. A proportion of these cars was supplied chassis only, and the coachbuilder forms an integral part of the identity of the car, even in the case of the factory built standard steel saloons.

johnfromstaffs ◊ 2015-04-27 11:28	Between 5 and 10 per cent of the "Cloud" type chassis were coachbuilt, and you are quite right in saying that coachbuilt cars were on their last legs by the time the Series III models came in in 1962. Nonetheless, this would amount to over 1,000 coachbuilt cars, including the Bentleys, built on this chassis type. One easy way to tell if a car is coachbuilt by outside (to Crewe) agencies is to see if it has a roof. The Standard Steel Saloons were just that, saloons, although H J Mulliner did convert a number to drophead coupes. Coachbuilders supplying bodies for these chassis were H J Mulliner, Park Ward, (later Mulliner Park Ward and under R-R control) James Young and Hooper. There was also a very small number of Shadow and T Series cars that were converted to two-door and even this: - Link to "en.wikipedia.org" Finally, the only way to tell a V-8 car from a Six cylinder car is to open the bonnet and look, until the Series 3, or III cars were introduced the standard bodies had no distinguishing features. -- Last edit: 2015-04-27 11:32:41

dsl ◊ 2015-04-27 14:06	There were coachbuilt RR SC and Bentley S saloons - special orders, James Young Tourings, the Mulliner Continentals (started on Bentley S, later offered on RR SC as well) - plus the factory LWB versions.

Crewe bought the standard steel bodies from Pressed Steel, but untrimmed and not painted. The bodies were made from welded together pressings just like any mainstream body would be. Crewe also exported chassis, untrimmed and bodiless to coachbuilders who built saloons and coupes from scratch with and without tin roofs. This is a coachbuilt Silver Cloud Saloon by James Young, compare with the subject car and you will see that it is not a Standard Steel Saloon. Link to "www.christies.com" This is another Silver Cloud Saloon, coachbuilt by Hooper. Link to "www.boldride.com" This is a drophead coupe by Mulliner, based upon the Standard Saloon.
