couldn't it also be an MG ADO16 variant since this is the US?

Mk1 rear lights and chrome along boot edge = MG 1100 Sports Sedan. Austin America has Mk2 lights and thick side trim. Still worth a page as MG.

Also Austin Americas only came as a 2 door.

Mmmm - no. This is a 2 door - the "rear door handle" is actually the filler cap here. Both MG 1100 Sports Sedan and Austin America were far more common as 2 door, but each was sold in US with 4 door as well - eg /vehicle_442277-MG-1100-Sports-Sedan-ADO16-1966.html and /vehicle.php?id=475578 - both of which are much rarer.

Just in case anyone's interested:
- Austin America was Mk2 only so never had the Mk1 rear lights. Also sold in CDN and for some reason Switzerland - you never know we might find one there one day. There was no Mk3 America or any other US ADO16 sales.
- MG 1100 Mk1 2 door was always export only - US, Europe, wherever - never sold in UK, which was exclusively 4 door in Mk1 era. But Mk2 was only sold as 2 door 1300 everywhere, although no longer in US. (This is a slight simplification because BMC did a lot of strange things from July 67 to March 68 - including putting the 1300 engine into the MG 1100 Mk1 for 2 months and calling it the MG 1100 1275, and then very briefly having Mk2 MG 1100 2 and 4 doors and a 1300 4 door - but none of these were made in more than a few hundred, and can basically be ignored). MG 1300 stopped in 71 when Mk3 ADO16 update arrived, although there are faint reports that some MG 1300 Mk3s were made in UK for overseas CKD assembly - not sure where. Spanish Authi MG sequences and combinations followed UK exactly as far as I know.

In the summer of 1997 I saw (sadly without photographing it) a Vanden Plas Princess 1100 or 1300 parked in Manhattan not far from Battery Park. Do you think, dsl, it was imported later as a classic by an entusiast?

Yes, a lot of these were bought up for export as classic cars, although it was mainly to Japan as the cars would be RHD.

^^ "In 1964, the Sports Sedan briefly shared its [US] showroom space with the MG Princess, basically a Vanden Plas Princess 1100 with some rather incongruous MG badges added to its grille, hubcaps and bootlid; only 154 of these models were built before BMC decided to concentrate efforts on the Sports Sedan." - Link to "www.aronline.co.uk" . So you might have seen one of those 154 .....

As jfs says VdP 1100/1300 became cult cars in eg Japan which hoovered up most of the UK survivors in 1990s (and inspired various Nissan Micra-based lookalikes - Link to "www.aronline.co.uk" ) . But VdP 1100/1300 also popular in Europe during 60s - particularly F - which might be a source for LHD cars for US enthusiasts.

Well, I sadly didn't pay attention to the front script, but I clearly remember that the front bumper had got a sort of central part extention upwards, a bit in the style of the 1957-58 Plymouth front bumper. This part looked to me a lot a USA specification in order to protect the car from small crashes towards those big American cars of the era. The same protection appeared on much of European imports (VW, Dauphines, mnay Fiats,...)
