W-reg only lasted from March to August 2000. When they got to T-reg in 1999 they changed the system so that the letter prefix changed every 6 months, because people kept waiting for the new letter registrations before they bought a new car so it could be distinguished from one made almost a year earlier (the English can quite be snobby). Two years later they'd reached the end of the alphabet, so they changed the system again to a numbering code in the middle of the registration, starting with 01 (2001), then 51 (September 2001 - March 2002), then 02, then 52 and so on. In the old system which began with the year letter at the end of the registration (then at the beginning from 1983) they left out all the letters in the alphabet that could be confused with numbers or other letters, so there were no I, O, Q, U or Z registrations. Although there are Q registation cars but they tend to be special types of cars like kit cars or imported cars where the age of the car is difficult to determine. |
