This is a picture from a USAC Indycar race in 1982. The #55 car is the March of Josele Garza (1981 Indy Rookie of the Year) and the #5 behind is the Pennzoil Chapparal of Johnny Rutherford. |

Was it called just March, or was there a name to it, like the name of the body/engine manufacturer? Edit: Found out already see http://67.18.8.78/res.php?s=1&ch=A&y=1982&r=15 -- Last edit: 2006-11-08 21:49:46 |

March is a brand name/acronym consisting of the initials of the founders of the company: Max Mosley, Alan Reese, Graham Coaker and Robin Herd. They considered using the name CHARM, but decided MARCH was more appropriate sounding for a race car manufacturer. From 1969 to about 1991, March built racing cars of every type, including Indy cars...which it won 5 times in 1983 through 1987. To learn more about March (which incidently had a facinating history) see www.marchives.com. |
