Classic trim. I believe all 1998+ W168 for Italian market should be badged as A xxx ESP (there is a badge on the rear and it was advertised this way

Interesting. I didn't know that it was advertised as such only here  other markets' cars didn't have ESP badge? If so, all Italian early A-Klasse have ro be renamed?
About the trim, indeed the appearance matches a Classic, but in the VIN check no trace of trim?

No, the ESP badge is an Italian-only feature. If you notice in the previous checked vehicles in Italian productions, the ones imported from other countries are recognizeable by a different badging on the rear, without the script, and diesel versions have the displacement code on left and the 'CDI' badge on right, while Italian diesel cars have the whole denomination (displacement + CDI) on the left to leave space for the ESP badge on the right.
This applies not on the very early ones (the few units sold in late 1997), but only to the ones sold after the moose-incident, including the facelifted 2001+ models. This differentiation was not carried over with the W169.

I notice that often the Classic trim is skipped, in particular in older build sheets. @dhill_cb7 did you notice the same?

Very interesting to know that. I've always wondered about the ESP badge, as I have seen a good amount of them without (my brother's A140 had it), and I thought it was (temporarily?) removed, or that those lacking it were indeed coming from other markets. A good number of A-Klasses were imported, especially from Germany, because very high demand here caused very long waiting lists. So, should Italian ones should have ESP as part of the model name (or extra info?) and a made for I tag (of course the ones intended for Italy)? What do the others think? ;)

I only look for the 9xx codes. I do not know the difference between the trim levels. I only add what I see on the build sheet. If the information is not there I generally will leave that update for an expert to decide :/

Anyway on the A-pillar, near the mirror, I think I see the Classic badge.
