A bit strange the name "Zollstock" (= yardstick, folding ruler) for a borough in Köln, but it exists: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%C3%B6ln-Zollstock (and the term Zollstock can cause angry corrections by technicially-adepted persons, because it's in fact wrong. "Zoll..." means "inch" (yes, customs, too, but this is something different) - but a Zollstock is always in metric scale... The only inch-measures, I can remember right now, which are used in Germany, are for vehicle-rims and water-pipes and other plumbing-material. Btw.: there's a quite active collector's scene for yardsticks. Bigger than for license plates. And on the left, you can see, how a house-owner uses state-given subventions. It's a big programme for building-insulation running now. For less CO2-emissions, for less addiction of imported oil and gas, for supporting the local craftsmen, etc. |
