Above the right rear lights it looks like "gtx". What makes it a Road Runner rather than a GTX? Both look quite similar...

ANTP, Roadrunner is a pure musclecar with minimal trim and stripped interior, instead of luxury GTX

all a GTX is is a souped up bad ass roadrunner

Hecubus CA

Yeah, souped up is the wrong way to put it. Mechanically, they were basically the same, the Road Runner was just much more basic (bench seat, vinyl floors, no power steering, etc).

Also another difference between the Roadrunner and the GTX is that the roadrunner has a flatter bonnet (i.e. the bulge isn't that big) and the GTX doens't have an adjustable air scoop and the 'runner has rectangular exhaust tips whereas in the pics the GTX has round ones

This is Steven Strope's "Hammer", built for the SEMA show. It started life as a 1970 Satellite, but now is a GTX clone...it does have a GTX emblem above the right rear taillight. The GTX hood and the Road Runner hood are identical, they only difference is wether it has no scoop, or the vacuum operated "Air Grabber" scoop. Otherwise they are the same dimension...the GTX hood is no taller than the Road Runner's. Only the Satellite had the perfectly flat hood with no bulge. The exhaust tips are aftermarket. The Road Runners and the GTXs used the same rectangular tips from the factory. Neither car has "fender scoops", with the notable exception of the Superbird. They do have stamped quarter panel "scoops" (non-functional, just for looks), and in that case, yes, the GTX has an emblem there. Besides all that, it's a full-on, custom-built show car, so it may not have emblems here or there...

Not quite. GTXs were more loaded with luxury features, but also had hotter engines, on the whole.

Roadrunner engine options (1970): 383 V8, 440 Six Barrel, 426 Hemi.
GTX engine options (1970): 440 V8, 440 Six Barrel, 426 Hemi.

Roadrunners came standard with 383 V8s, whereas GTXs came with 440 4 barrel V8s standard. GTXs never used in the 383, and Roadrunners only offered the 440 4 barrel for one year (1972). It should be noted that the Plymouth Roadrunner Superbird used the same engine options (440, 440+6, 426 Hemi) as the 1970 GTX, but this doesn't apply to the standard Roadrunner.

Hey all, I've seen this car in person and spent some time talking with Steve about it. So I wanted to let you know that the "GTX" badge on the trunk you are basing your arguments on is actually Pure Vision's own company badge placed on the car. Also the car DID begin life from the factory as a 1970 Satelite but in the time honored tradition of customization has taken many styling cues from both the Roadrunner AND the GTX.

It has chrome around the back tail light panel not found on a RR. but it has RR / GTX tail lights so its either a GTX or high end Satellite with RR/GTX tail lights and hood added.

yeah this is right in every way. the build they did on Rides was a great one and it is indeed both or technically three combined: org. Satt, then both roadrunner and gtx. imho one of the most beautiful mopars ever built. i believe that they also use the hammer in the new fast and furious movie, pretty sure michelle rodriguez wrecks in it, or whats supposed to be it. its shown pretty briefly but looked like hammer to me. The amount of misinformation in this thread is staggering. First of all, in 1970 GTX and Roadrunner were separate models, not an option package. One has an RM vin, one has an RS vin. Available hoods on the Roadrunner and GTX were exactly the same. Without specific knowledge as to this particular car, all you can definitively say is that it's a modified Plymouth B body Satellite / Roadrunner / GTX. It appears to have an N96 Roadrunner / GTX hood, but no specific badging to identify it beyond that. They all had identical sheetmetal.
