Nearly impossible to see such a car on German junkyards. All of them were exported, even in wreck-condition.

And a lot of them are still running with 500.000 km + on the clock.

 What's the red in the background? Rather a truck-cab than a Van, or?

Though it cannot hold with all of its predecessors, which were all better and more reliable. The mid-90ies Benzes were worst, compared with them. They have cost Mercedes Benz a lot of reputation.

@ingo: Indeed. For example: E-Klasse W210 had/has rust problems, the first A-Klasse rolled over in the "Elchtest" ...

And the W210 was really terrible. The worst Benz ever, except the early G-Modelle, when Puch couldn't hold the Mercedes-quality level.

The first M-Klasse (built in USA) was really terrible, too.

First generation A-Class was pretty bad too.

The last of first generation became good and reliable, better than the first of the next version. The Mercedes-mechanics have recommend that to my parents, so they have bought one of the last 1st gen A 210 and not the successor. They are terrible according the Benz-guys.

Why would anyone export a wrecked car?

G-MANN wrote Why would anyone export a wrecked car?

Because they are cheap here and the manpower to repair them is too expensive here, but very cheap in the destination countries. The very most vehicles (cars, vans, SUV's, trucks, buses) exported to Africa ARE wrecks. And a lot, which are going to Eastern Europe, too. For many years Polish guys have bought newer crashed cars over here and brought them back home for repairing and selling again. Until Poland came to the EU and the Schengen-Zone, they had to make a trick to bring the cars over the border. The import of complete cars was restricted, so the Polish guys have pulled the engine off and the axles off, that it accorded the Polish regulations. You could see hundreds of Polish trailers and vans on the Autobahn going eastwards, whereon cars were placed on old tires, the axles and engines knotted with tension belts besides.

I cannot find Youtubes with scenes from the export of wrecks to Africa now, but there are several TV-reportages made about it. There are export-dealers (in Germany this business is ruled by Lebanese clans), who even own old ships from companies like Wallenius Wilhelmsen ( http://www.2wglobal.com/www/wep// ) and making their business with them. My father once had seen on the River Elbe a former container-ship, converted to a car-export-ship. They have mounted frames in and on it, that they could used it a open parking decks. The cars were lashed down close-by, without any space between. And all were wrecks.

You can identify the used cars, dedicated to Africa very easily, when they are loaded on the trucks. All mirrors, badges, indicators and taillights are remounted - because the danger is big, that they will be stolen on the way from the ship the the market in Cotonou/Benin (the biggest import place in Africa). Once i#ve seen a reportage, it was fascinating, how this business goes on :wow:
