I don't think so.. 1. This looks nothing like the Lancia. Details don't match, and this car has a longer body. 2. I doubt this much detail would be put into a replica with so little screen time. 3. The Appia Vignale is also a rare car. For the base of a replica, surely a cheaper car or one that was due to be scrapped anyway would be used? |

Back in 1969 the Lancia was just a cheap old car... I think the details perfectly match, just the front has been altered a bit to look like an Aston Martin. (and the car obviously is LHD, even though it has a GB license plate). |

@mudflap - read through everything on /vehicle_3989-Aston-Martin-DB4-1962.html as there is a lot of - sometimes contradictory - information. My summary is that they seem to have pushed both a DB4 and the Appia-based version over the cliff - it wasn't spectacular enough when they did the DB4, so they did it again with the lookalike. But some points to ponder: 1] 163 ELT survived with DVLA details still current, and reappeared in the Benny Hill show /vehicle.php?id=287282 . 2] compare this main photo with the 1st thumb in /vehicle_3989-Aston-Martin-DB4-1962.html - http://www.geting.se/image.php/276232-ItalianJob59.JPG/full . This main does NOT have a winged AM badge above the grille nor the right depth of that panel, the same bumpers (over-riders here), the chrome surround to the number plate, larger indicators than sidelights, chromed interior mirror, quarterlights, a black hood, a tall bonnet vent nor (possibly) the correct door handles and shape of wing side vent. And I think the boot here is too sunken for a DB4. 3] A 10 year old Appia in 1969 may have only been as cheaply regarded as something like an MGA, even with a Vignale body. But there are still some hints that 2 DB4s may have been involved. The surviving Benny Hill DB4 seems to have a red hood and seats, as do some of the IJ pictures, but other IJ pictures show a black hood. And different photos show with and without front over-riders. Maybe the black hood was the trashed one, a faked-163 ELT which was originally another car whose identity is now lost...... The Italian Job website has some fascinating information on the cars involved, much of which has been recorded here on various threads. The piece on the DB4 confirms the view that a 'doctored' Lancia Flaminia Cabriolet was used to replicate the DB4 for its 'second' drop off the hillside. http://www.theitalianjob.com/cars_fastcars.htm The Flaminia does appear to have proportions more comparable to the DB4 than an Appia. |

It isn't an Appia. David Salamone himself said it was a Flaminia and he fabloned a couple of the double headlamps and sprayed over it and sprayed the hood black.  |

Your are right. In the August 2013 issue of Classic & Sport Car there is an interview with Salamone , where he confirms that it is a Flaminia: "I raced around the garages (in Turin) and eventually found a Lancia Flaminia convertible, which seemed a suitable double but had twin headlights. giancarlohgt: you are right. The windscreen wipers go the other way from a Flaminia which would be an odd detail to change! The dashboard on the Flaminia is rather flat on top and lacks the bulging instrument binnacle of the car in the image. Again, it would be odd that a bulging binnacle was especially made yet fitted to the wrong side of the car and not fashioned to match the Aston's. Also, work has plainly had to be done on the front of the car including a new bonnet, fake grill and side light area. From the image, these are not exactly finessed yet the Flaminia has creases in the top of its wings meaning that these areas would have to be completely rebuilt, yet they do not look anything but highly professional. The wings on this car though would match the Alfa Spider versions without modification. |

Interesting ..... and convincing suggestion. But with 50+ years of myths and legends plus lots of insider statements all saying Lancia, we should probably be very definite if we want to overturn the conventional wisdom. We don't want to start street riots ...... |
