explorer4x4 ◊ 2006-04-24 06:15	Okay. Now for the record, let us clarify something. I did a little research on allpar.com and other Chrysler corp websites and I found a lot of things I did not know! First off, before the gasoline crashes of the seventies and eithies, many cars were huge gas guzzlers. The Dodge Monaco was one of them. And in the 70's, when gas prices soared, the Monaco which was sitting on the massive Chrysler C-body was downsized to the B-body. The Monaco was Dodge's most popluar full-size sedan especially for commercial use such as police fleets amd taxi fleets. When the Monaco was down-sized, Dodge wanted to retain it's full-size line so it introduced the Dodge Royacl Monaco. Previous Royacl Monacos (up intill the 5th generation Monaco of 1975) were in fact considered the up-scale model but as of 1975, Dodge shook off the luxury Royacl Monaco fame and it was now considered the larger model. And the doors on the headlights like 70's Lincolns/Mercurys were not on Royal Monacos after 1975, I would think that police fleets would want the larger mid-size Royal Monaco because, it had more room and was able to hold a bigger engine so, ya the car in Knight Rider is a full-size 1977 Dodge Royal Monaco Squad Sedan. qwerty_86 ◊ 2006-04-24 07:29	No, it's not a Royal Monaco! It's a regular Monaco! Regarding your Royal Monaco theory: Quote 1976 saw the Plymouth and Dodge C-bodies take on an identity more their own. It seems to have been recognized that the 1974-75s looked too much like each other, not to mention certain Buick models. The Gran Fury reverted to dual headlights in a very attractive front end refreshening, while the topline Royal Monaco brought back the hideaway headlights that had been a Monaco hallmark in '72-'73. The opening credits of "Hill Street Blues" opened with a face-on shot of a Royal Monaco squad with all lights blazing, including open hideaway headlights. 1977 marked a move downmarket for the Monaco name, which appeared on '77-'78 B-bodies. The C-body Royal Monaco and its Gran Fury counterpart remained in production through the '77 model year, while Chrysler-badged C-bodies lingered through '78. I am told a Newport squad was offered in '78, but I have never seen one. . . . Models of this last generation Monaco squad were made by MPC, and can be found on eBay, but must be considered with caution. The first offering of a Monaco squad model (which may have been a "Dukes of Hazsard" model, I can't remember that part for sure) was a strange modification of the existing Monaco 2 door hardtop mold into a phantom 4 door with the 2 door tail treatment and a roofline much like that of a 1973-'75 fullsize Ford 4 door sedan. The "T. J. Hooker" Monaco squad more accurately depicted the '77-'78 B-body 4 door sedan lines and tail treatment. - http://www.allpar.com/squads/dodge-monaco.html This is the opening face-on shot of the Royal Monaco from Hill Street Blues: As you can see, the front end is very different from the car in the first screenshot above. This is a picture of the AMT/Ertl Dodge Monaco model kit (ERTL bought out MPC recently). This kit is for the Batman movie, but the same car is used for the Dukes of Hazzard and TJ Hooker model kits. This looks like the car in the original screenshot. So that proves that this car is a '77 or '78 Dodge Monaco and not the higher end Royal Monaco. -- Last edit: 2006-04-24 07:31:09
