Lea-Francis 12hp or 14hp Four Light saloon 1946+ so it was still built in Coventry.

Same body for either engine size, but the 12 was discontinued in 1948, whereas the 14 continued until 1954.

The script probably called for a Cadillac Eldorado, but you know film producers........

The episode summary is as follows: -

"The Ewings are informed that Jenna has been arrested in Laredo for murdering Marchetta. Bobby visits Jenna who tells him that Charlie may be in Rome. Jenna pleads not guilty to the murder charge, but the judge refuses to release her on bail. Pam continues to search the clinics in the Caribbean for Mark. Eddie agrees to consider Lucy's suggestion that they become partners in a construction project. Jenna's attorney, Scotty Demerest, questions her and she says she may have been chloroformed. Jamie sees J.R. cuddling with Serena during lunch. Sue Ellen hears Jamie blasting J.R. for his behavior with Serena. "

So it is possible that this shot is somewhere in a part of the Caribbean of former British influence, which could be how a Lea-F got out there.

More likely, the Lea-Francis was used to help make the location look like an old British colony. The house is a typical mock Spanish colonial edifice that could be in Beverley Hills or any upmarket neighbourhood of Los Angeles.

PHP is a Coventry registration from the second half of 1954, so this car is a Fourteen and not a Twelve. It will also be among the last of a long but numerically small run of cars, which is why Lea-Francis went bust so often. The mystery still remains as to how it got to wherever the film was made, be it in the south of the USA, or in the Caribbean. While it was a well made and fairly sporty car, rather in the mould of a Riley that had been frightened by a Rover, it was hardly a ball of fire, and would have compared badly with the new 2.4 litre Jaguar which was introduced in 1956.

Maybe Lea-F got to know about the small Jaguar and decided to give up the fight.

The car was probably imported by a movie studio at some point for use in films set in the UK. Studio filming for Dallas was done in Los Angeles, and this scene was probably done there too since there was no reason to do it in Texas. Indeed there were no doubt more British cars available in Los Angeles than anywhere in Texas, precisely because of the film industry's need for foreign cars.

Yes that's a very late 14 h.p. Lea-Francis of 1954 and we think it was still in England in 1999
