The Griswold family car. Gets the most action during the opening scene, afterwards it is used a couple of times and is seen parked in the garage in several scenes.

I don't think the Taurus wagon ever came with wood panelling, they just added it to make it look cruddier (like the fantastically hideous Family Truckster in Vacation), though this would have been quite a new car when this was made.

Wood looks good on the inside of cars, but not on the outside!

Eww, they took a new futuristic looking car and slapped a bunch of wood on the outside to make it look old and dated

Lol, it's the Wagon Queen Family Truckster mkII!

Is it me, or does it look purple/burgundy instead of green?

The wood only looks good on full size wagons

It features in one action sequence at the beginning (which isn't really epic) and after that there is some minor use in a few other scenes, so I'm not sure if it deserves 4 stars.

That mauve colour was available, since I've seen it on Taurus's going around.

Real wood or plastic-tape in wood-look?

I don´t think that this is real wood. They don´t use real wood in the interior, so I think they didn´t use real wood on the outside.
But I´m not sure.

Too sad they don't make cars with wooden panels nowadays.
I personally think wooden panels looks fancy and stylish.

At least on wagons and perhaps even on large saloon cars. :)

that little space under the panel where there is the Ford logo makes it 1989 only ( time of movie )

Didn't all the wagon models in this generation come standard with a full roof rack? I notice this one only has the side rails. Were the crossbars removable?

I like how the Vacation movies poked fun at the popular family transporters of each era by making them over-the-top. The first film takes the huge American wagons of the 70s and early 80s and throws on all that extra faux wood paneling and metallic pea color which was a popular color for decor and appliances at the time. In this film, which is in 1989, they do the same thing but with the Taurus wagon which was a very popular family wagon at the time and mixed it with that same faux wood paneling and mauve which was a more popular color at the end of the decade.

This is more than likely a 1989 L trim-level considering it looks to be one of the more basic models despite the custom job for the film. Despite its purposeful gaudy look, I think the Taurus complemented the Griswold house quite well when seen parked in the garage later in the film. The faux wood paneling that was never offered actually gave the home a warm and inviting Christmasy feel quite specific during that time period.

They used both a 1988 and 1989 model. The 1988 is the one that was used the most, but the 1989 was used for driving under the trailer and I believe it was also used for when it plunges after avoiding the snowblower. The 1989 appears to be the one in the main picture.
