I'm thinking now that this car is probably a 73 Impala...the marker lights are in the bumper, which seems identical to a 73 car. 74 had them on the fender extensions. |

No joke, it appears to be a 1973 Bel Air with a unique rubber front end I had seen decades ago. I say it looks a '73 because of the front side marker light ahead of the front wheel. You never know, it may have been something they fashioned pre-production on a '72 because the rubber front end was not the place they wanted to mount the marker light (they were rolling them out on a trial basis remember). The rubber front end was something Chevrolet was toying with around 1972/73 to meet the upcoming bumper standards. They likely rolled out a few into service as taxis to get some real world feedback in the field. I actually used to have a black & white picture of a 1972 Impala with that squeezable front end in some old truck trade magazine from around 1972/73 (it was Bus, Truck & Transport magazine). Chevrolet also rolled out a fleet of 50 1973 Impalas with Oldsmobile dashboards containing experimental airbags. I remember seeing an Allstate ad in a National Geographic magazine from 1973, touting Allstate's push for airbags, citing the empirical data of the real-world feedback from the experimental 1973 Chevrolets. |

Indeed, it is still 1973 model year. See the front sidemarker still at the front fender. According to the following contemporary article, it is one of 100 1973 Chevrolet Bel Airs outfitted with special 5-mph bumpers which apparently were even more effective than the ones that went into production. Link to "news.google.com" It would be really interesting to find one of these cars, but they either were run into the ground as most taxis were, or returned to GM. |
