Did some research using my Burness album and vintage NADA books. In 1962, Rambler had no fewer than 13 different station wagon models in 3 different series. Since the above pictured wagon is in the larger series, I won't go into the American models. In the Classic and Ambassador series (the primary difference between them is the engine - 6 vs V-8) there was: 1) The Classic/Ambassador Deluxe, with no sweepspear. 2) The Classic/Ambassador Custom, with an upper spear that widened slightly as it proceeded back along the front fender, per Vilero's links. 3) The Classic/Ambassador Custom 400, which had a narrow upper spear that curved around at the back of the rear fender and came back forward to the start of the rear doors. The above car has the 400 trim, making it either a "Rambler Classic Custom 400" station wagon or a "Rambler Ambassador Custom 400" station wagon, depending on engine, nameplates/V-8 emblems, taillamps and wheel cover centers. Also, the Ambassador Custom 400's lower rear trim appears wider than the Classic's. Since I see no V-8 on the front fenders and a narrow lower trim spear, I believe this to be the Classic model (# 6218-5). (The "Cross Country" name was a blanket name used by Rambler for all 3 series, and appeared on the lift gate just below the window.) Whew! I hope this helps to clarify things. If any of this is not fully accurate, please add any verified information. -- Last edit: 2010-01-16 16:44:17 |
