Not a Mercedes-Benz, but a Stoewer R 40 Kfz.1 |

I guess that makes the Mercedes G5 the single rarest of these things. How many are there exactly? Until now I only knew of Steyr, Mercedes and Horch making them. |

Mercedes-Benz G5 was a different vehicle, although similar, made almost only for export, in very small quantity (I found a number 378, but I don't know if it's a whole production). A standard jeep in the German army was supposed to be "le.gl. Einheits-PKW", depicted here ("light off-road standard passenger car"), but they appeared complicated and unreliable. Most were made just by Stoewer (some 7700 in three models), they were also made by BMW (3225) and Hanomag (about 2000). Horch made only heavier vehicles (medium and heavy Einheits-PKW), Steyr made trucks (including 1.5t cars), and Mercedes made own G5 and simpler 170VK model. Eventually all light vehicles were replaced in production with cheaper VW Typ 82. -- Last edit: 2016-04-17 00:28:58 |
