This is a Nu Image production filmed in Bulgaria, and there's a bad Nu Image film (US Seals) where a car crashes and its fake Albanian plate falls off to reveal a real Bulgarian plate behind it. I wonder if the same thing happens in this film.

Gag Halfrunt ◊ 2006-04-03 11:25	Perhaps they used Velcro or something, so that they could just stick the plate on and take it off again at the end of the day, and out of habit they did the same with all their cars, even ones that were going to be smashed up. I once walked past a car being used in a film shoot and, yes, it had prop plates on top of the real ones. So perhaps everyone does it.

To identify by the Wartburg /vehicle_22547-Wartburg-353W-1975.html , because GDR-cars were never available in the Soviet Union (and after 1990 the Russian have bought "real" (Western) cars and not that GDR-junk.

I think leaving them on prevents the prop guys from getting the plates lost or mixed up while filming. Plus, using paste or glue is easier, especially if you have to do a bunch of cars.

Actually in the early 90's not everyone could afford real western cars. And since USSR fall down after some time after berlin wall it makes lots GDR cars leaks in SU. I saw many Wartburgs in Soukhumi in august of 91. And in the middle of 90's there was some quantity of Barkases and IFA trucks in Russia, i remember even a Trabant that was parked in the neighbourhood.

Most likely, these cars were brought into Russia by the servicemen of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_of_Soviet_Forces_in_Germany When they left the former DDR, they bought masses of used cars there, mostly Soviet brands, Lada, Moskvich, Volga (but no Sapos ), about DDR-cars I haven't heard that much. Otherwise the prices of COMECON-cars collapsed in the DDR within hours after the 1.7.1990, when the D-Mark was introduced there, so the former extreme overpriced cars there were flogged, often even trashed or thrown into the field.
