The DeLorean is a British car (Northern Ireland), not American. The DeLorean country flag next to the car, is shown as USA. It is NOT an American car!! As an American who has a DeLorean, and lived 10 miles from it's creator John Z. DeLorean (who is an American in NJ) and having returned from the 25th anniversary of the car near Belfast and toured the old plant, I CAN ASSURE YOU THE CAR WAS MADE IN DUNMURRY, NEAT BELFAST IN NORTHERN IRELAND, SO IT IS A BRITISH CAR!

Origin is not especially where it is built, but rather where it is designed, where the company that produce it was localized. The company is not Irish I think. And if it was, they would have sold the car in IE/UK I think.

antp BE

2006-09-15 14:55

The De Lorean Motor Company was set up in Northern Ireland and heavily funded by the British government, therefore 'Made in UK'. In the end the company was sadly killed after just 18 month due to a economic recession and undercover FBI agents trying to buy company shares with drugs.

Even though targeted at customers in the USA this was, to my knowledge, not an exclusive market. Therefore I would not use 'Made for USA'.

Well, "made for something" was for special versions of cars (e.g. Citroën SM with horrible headlights, or Austin with fancy names). Here it is the "normal" version that is US-specs.

The Delorean did have Porsche engines installed in the car, in fact u can listen to the car's torque of how gruntling it sounds compared to the regular PRV Pugeot engines that are stock for the Deloreans. In the Back to the Future 1 scene in the last part of the movie when "Doc" Brown backs out of the drive way after picking up Marty and Jeniffer before having the car fly, listen to the car's torque while the car is backing out of the drive way

Or, more likely, the sound editor mixed in the noise of a Porsche engine to make the car sound more powerful. It's entirely normal for sound effects to be beefed up like that.

A friend of mine, a Japanese in the USA, had such a DeLorean a long time ago.

Mostly there was no engine-sound anyways - because it never runs. Worst quality as hell, even worse than the Maserati Biturbo, he owned later.
After these exotic desastrous excursions he went back to reality and bought some VW's.

Ca.4-5 years ago, in my old home-town Dortmund I was wondering, to see a DeLorean parking on the street in the neighbourhood. Obviously the owner has used it for daily driving (or daily standing around).

The reason why the movie makers had changed the engines was because it wasnt getting up to speed that was the problem that they faced in the movie. It was the fact that all the weight that was put on the car and a wee little 6 cyl wouldnt cut it, so they put a porsche engine in it.

Look do you really think they would go through the trouble to custom fit a Porsche 928 v8 engine in a Delorean, with the limited budget they had.
Besides at that point in time a Porsche 928 engine would probably cost an arm or a leg.
Plus the Porsche engine is a much faster revving engine than the one we hear in the movies.

demetrie US

2009-08-15 23:46

Well, you and i don't know of how much of a budget they had. Besides, a Delorean with a Peugot V6 engine is sluggish so there's no way a Delorean with that(peugot v6) engine could reach 88mph or higher.

Let alone perform the way it did on film especially in the chase scenes.

Matter of fact here's proof that they did change the engine for film purposes, just read the last paragraph right above the "Electronics" section that is green: http://www.backtothefuture.me.uk/delorean.html

And here's another proof about it, just read the "Behind The Scenes" section
: Link to "bttf.wikia.com"

jesper1501 DK

2009-09-09 05:38

Now first of all ask any Delorean owner if their standard Delorean could reach 88 MPH/140,8 KMH.
I promise you it can easily reach that speed, it would not be quick to reach that speed I'll grant you that.

Besides your government at that time had a ridiculous idea having all of your cars speedometers end on 80-85 MPH.

And on another note the Delorean on the european market was actually more powerful it had about 170 hp, because in most european countries it wasn't a necessary to have a catalytic converter (which in this case was a powerhog).
So the european version of the Delorean had more power, plus it had better handling because there wasn't a law that stipulated the headlights being as high up from the ground as in USA, therefore the front was lower to the ground.

To sum it up it could easily have driven itself under its own power, notice how the ground is always wet when the Delorean is in action (then it could easily slide around like it does).
And take a look at the chase with the Delorean it never really looks like it's going fast.

Sorry, Mike, but you're not correct. It was made in Northern Ireland, which is indeed on the Irish island, but it belongs to the UK. The Republic of Ireland is an own, independent country. Sure, in the historical view it's one country, but not in the actual situation.

I don't really agree with your opinion about Germany: East Germany was not the USSR - but a Soviet colony! And artificial creation, made by Soviet-bondaged exile-communists. It was never accepeted by the majority of the West Germans as a real, own and independent country.

The DDR-habitants have heard this hundreds-of-thousands times, when we West Germans went back after a visit there: "Now we are going back to Germany".

Anyone else notice it appears the ride height in the front has been altered on the De Loreans in this film?

Only three were used in the first movie (and one of these was cut for inside shots)
I am not sure that they used much more for the other two movies.

I wonder, is it possible to add "Time Machine" to "Model" (so that it make "DeLorean DMC-12 Time Machine") in cases when we see a slightly visually modified BTTF DeLorean?.. It will be much easier to browse - we still can see all of them on main DeLorean page but we can sort out all of the original and replica time machines in a few clicks...

That's a little messy to add names like that to model names. As I said on /vehicle.php?id=2887#Comment1513691 a feature to link cars will be added later

what i never understood is why the DeLorean is covered in ice when Einstein comes back and not the other times it travels in time...

chicomarx BE

A more fundamental problem is the DeLorean can not travel back in time without destroying itself.

"The idea is that according to Quantum Theory, the universe doesn't have just a unique single history. Instead, the universe has every single possible history, each with its own probability. [...] But each history is complete and self contained, describing not only the curved space-time, but also the objects in it. So a rocket can not transfer to another alternative history, when it comes round again. It is still in the same history, which has to be self consistent." http://www.hawking.org.uk/space-and-time-warps.html

Gag Halfrunt wrote Or, more likely, the sound editor mixed in the noise of a Porsche engine to make the car sound more powerful. It's entirely normal for sound effects to be beefed up like that.

I've read that it was a Porsche 928S V8 engine, As the standard 2.8 liter PRV V6 (Which was also in my 1980 Volvo 265 GLE station wagon.) Was anything but muscular sounding!!! I think the transmissions were also Porsche 928 five speed manuals.

In the first part, the Delorean is shown to be almost indestructible,as Marty crashes it into the farm house and at the town theater and yet still remains the same as if it didn't crashed at all.

Let's just clear it out. Vin of the Hero A-car was: SCEDT26T8BD005261 made in October 1981 - letters 'BD' means it's 1981 model year. Besides all cars in all 3 BTTF parts had hood August to November 1981 - model year 1981 cars. (only the 'fiberglass car' had flat hood which means 82-83 model, but it's just fake car) Also restored BTTF III 'desert car' had vin of 1981MY: SCEDT26T8BD004689.
