niels0827 ◊ 2006-08-07 11:14	No, either Bel Air or Biscayne. Likely Bel Air. Caprices and Impalas had six taillights. This one has four. It's likely to be a Bel Air in that Biscaynes exited production in 1973 and were sold basically only to taxi and police fleets.

Am I correct. maybe someone like Ford guy or Firebird86 could help me out, because I have a friend with a 1973 full size chevrolet, and he would like to know

Ddey65 ◊ 2008-09-30 22:14	You'll also find this script on the trunks of the 1971's 1972's, and even the 1969's. On the 1970's they were on the grille, but before that they weren't as fancy.
matt trakker ◊ 2009-04-20 05:46	The Impala and Caprice were different cars. The only time the Impalas and Caprices ever used similar trim levels was in situations like the 71-72 Impala convertible. There were no Caprice convertibles, so many of those Impalas were completely loaded with everything but the Caprice interior, which wasn't used in convertibles anyway, even when the ragtops became Caprices in 1973. The Caprice had more features than the Impalas, different seats and door panels, instrument cluster trim, different grilles, there was extra trim on the trunklid, lots of little differences. This car in question also has the specific Bel Air/Biscayne interior, you can tell by the door panels in the car which have no simulated woodgrain. Same with the dash pad.

In 1973, the model designation was carried on the front fenders just behind the front wheel, and in G-MANN's posting of 2008-09-30 above, the Bel-Air logo is visible in the first photo (the front three-quarter view showing the right side of the car). It's not really readable, but in that year it had a very distinctive vertical outline shape, taller than it was wide, with the "Bel" placed more-or-less above the "Air" instead of next to it, and a big swooshy downstroke on the "A" divided the two.

I see that this thread, as a whole, celebrated its fifth anniversary just last month. :-) I remember seeing this film when it first came out, and even then I was wondering why they'd used such a cheap model line as the Bel Air for that particular car (given that the movie is practically wall-to-wall 1973 Chevys, especially in that sequence involving the Bel Air here, and they could have chosen any model). I'm thinking now that this Bel Air might have been built with a Police package, given all the stunt driving it goes through, whereas an off-the-lot Caprice Classic would have been wallowing all over the road. The stills shown here show the Bel Air riding really high; they might have swapped in beefier springs.

Charlie, was played by the late Joie Chitwood, who was known for his racing and thrill shows, featuring such things like the "Mr. Pibb Cannon"(Seen briefly in "Smokey And The Bandit Part 3")and for his work as a stunt coordinator for "Live And Let Die".
