 here it was an pure oddity... sold only for 1995 and totally eclipsed by the Protegé ( even the MX-3 sold more than they did )

 Pretty much the same story here... I think I see the Lantis hatchback more often, and that says a lot considering I only see them once or twice a year.

 I like these too, as well as the Lantis and the MX-3. This version wasn't sold here (we only got BG and BA Lantis and later BJ 323F), but I recall seeing one with foreign plate many years ago. The BA Lantis was relatively visible on our streets, but now have all disappeared except the casual one a year, here too. In a town near mine there still is a red 1991 BG 323 F in excellent conditions, surely owned by an enthusiast.

As a side note, Mazda in Italy back then (early-mid 90s) was represented by private firm Sidauto of Turin, the same importer of Saab, and I've always thought that they were trying to make Mazda a somewhat niche/upscale player (maybe because they were used to sell Saabs), by importing here mostly the range topping models/trims. Sidauto then lost the Saab rights when GM Italy took over, and in late 90s they lost Mazda too when the Japanese brand opened their official subsidiary (and selling all the usual range) closing down not much later.

 Yes. I remember well Sidauto when it just begun its activity in the mid seventies. Their adress was in front of the school I attended and I clearly remembere the bery first Mazda 323 seen in my lige in the spring of 1977 when I was almost 16.
