Both as boring as the Guardian on the day after a Labour Party collapse.

Better that than the gloating triumphalism of the Daily Prejudice rags. And there's still the crosswords and football reports for some excitement.

Crosswords with misprints are a bit of a non sequitur, and football? Good grief!

The Saturday before the election, some of the candidates had stands in the town centre. Having read all four manifesti, I went to three stands (no Green Party), and asked two questions, using the same words.

What are you doing to combat global warming caused by excess population?
What are you going to do to my taxes?

The canvasser on the Labour Party stand said, and I quote: “You have a closed mind, I have nothing to say to you.” She then turned her back on me.

No way to beat the Tories, is it?

What answer did the others give to your first question? What sort of answer were you looking for?

johnfromstaffs EN

2019-12-28 19:36

Nobody answered it at all.

The Tory canvasser asked me to send an e-mail asking my question which she would pass to her environmental colleague on the County Council, no response yet.

I was looking for some acknowledgement that it was a valid problem, with comments that it would be a very difficult subject for many reasons, possibly religious as top difficulty, plus some expertise in population management (not control), since it seems that there are statistical reasons why numbers cannot reduce either simply or quickly enough. No manifesto of any of the four competing parties had even mentioned global population as a problem, let alone offered any answers, which struck me as almost as appalling as the entire gamut of idiots on offer in the vote scrabble.

Perhaps I should add that the Tory was our local county councillor, but she didn’t know me from Adam anyway.

To be as even handed as possible, a bloke on the Labour stand engaged me in conversation, no doubt having seen the look on my face, but he had nothing to offer except to say that he was sure Johnson would sell the NHS. I still can’t accept that as a genuine proposition, I think it would cause national unrest.

Europe would normally be in decline from an ageing population, situation Japan is in now. The growth is purely driven by migration.
In the UK Tories want the migrants for the economy and Labour for the votes.

Right, but you were asking your local politician to tackle a global problem, when they're probably just proposing a new bicycle lane. Short of handing out contraception in third world countries I don't see what they can do. On a UK level they can put a cap on the number of new arrivals, but both parties have their reasons not to do so.

No, the politician was representing her party in a national election and was there to be a conduit for questions of any sort. They were there to talk about government policy in order to capture votes in a national election and it was a perfectly valid question. They are quick enough to open global subjects if they think they can raise tax revenue from them. Also, County Councillors in England do more than just talk about cycle lanes, the annual budget of Staffs C.C. was £508 million last year, looked after by 62 councillors, and they are the people who negotiate with the national government on behalf of their areas. I still have not found out what this government intends to do to promote thought, at, say, the UN, about this subject, which was all I wanted to know.

Well, you had the chance to ask the Labour people - before the Europe election I couldn't ask the SPD (socialdemocrats, the German equivalent of Labour) guys - because they, six old white men, stood with the back to the public and were busy with theirselves.
Sure, I wanted to troll them, as I'm a representative of their rivals, but even that wasn't possible.

Labour and SPD are still exercising the all-time most popular socialist's sports = riding dead horses.

Well, positively said, this comment is pure Britishness - negatively said, it's Britain-egocentrism à la Brexiteer.

W.O.Bentley may be known by the -not too large amount- classic car enthusiast scene - but anything about cricket is outside Britain and the Commonwealth absolutely unknown.

Fully agreed - as a voter and of course as a politician you should be that intelligent, to divide between the types of elections and the different parliament.
The bicycle lane in town is a topic for the communal elections, and migration and global warming for national or international (the only one is for the European Council) elections - when you mix that up, it became ridiculous.

Mmhh, tricky topic - can't you be proud only for something, you have been made by yourself?
Belonging to a nation or ethnic group or having a specific citizenship, is nothing, you are responsible by yourself.

We Germans are very careful with this topic, because all, who say, they are proud to be a German, are seen as Nazis - and they are some.
I'm not proud to be a German - but I'm glad, happy and satisfied to be a German.

If I may offer my two cents - or someone else's - the late comedian George Carlin famously spoke of this topic, ethnic/national pride, during one of his HBO specials only about 15 years ago before he passed away. See the clip here.

Interesting reading due to a wide range of origins, age groups and levels of education. But I'm only getting involved to the following, car-related extent: I worked at a Cadillac dealership, specialized in the pre-1980 models (I may have mentioned that on occasion...) and placed a portrait of said Mr. Leland on the wall, right above my desk. ONE of my workmates had an idea who that was, everyone else thought it was my granddad or somebody else. Yes, that was rather disappointing - but I wouldn't expect this to be common knowledge on a website dedicated all sorts and variations of not railbound motorized vehicles.
