It looks very like the Hillman/Commer van of the period, but not totally sure. |

Express name only came in 1950 with the new version based on the Minx MkIV. This earlier type revived the Supervan name from pre-WW2 Minx-based Commers from late 1947 relaunch based on Minx Mk.II and then late 1948 Minx Mk.III update (with full-width front). I think we could tidy up some of the names entered for these vans before and after WW2 as they're a bit scattered into too many clusters. Am tempted to suggest we lose the 8cwt bit in the names so we can bring export examples into simple groups, and maybe just use Supervan (1933-49) and Express (1950+). Comments?? |

I would agree dsl with using Supervan as the model (perhaps optionally using 8cwt in the extra info for home markets?). A quick search for Supervan new introduction entries in CM archive provides this with July 1937 almost certainly being the first Commer Supervan. I have added any relevant identifying feature of the body but unchecked for possible errors. (CM also later mentions the first Supervan was 1933 but I believe that was an error rather than saying 8cwt.) My book says Supervan name used from 1933 when the first Minx-based van introduced. All the changes should follow the Minx sequences very closely, but would be more difficult to pin down as van rear body was fairly constant compared to recognisable detail changes on saloon with each new Phase; also some of the car Phases involved engine upgrades from preceding type which may not have carried through to the van. So car changeovers mean something, but less definable for the vans unless there is a clear front view of the grille. (Or a plate date). |

Good to clear up the 1933 start of Supervan usage. The van body 1933 through to 1945-6 went through a number of changes before it became fixed. Spats on the rears seems to have been brief and a rectangular wheel-arch in '45 an odd-ball perhaps. I'm still trying to understand some of the other, later changes... |
