Alexander ◊ 2007-10-01 17:39	Wow, this is a rare sight. It is a Sturmpanzer IV 'Brummbär' (Sturmpanzer 43) Sd.Kfz.166 (1943-44) of which 306 were produced by the Deutsche Eisenwerke. It is based on the running gear and hull of the Panzer-Kampfwagen IV and has the 15 cm Sturmhaubitze 43 L/12 (assault gun) installed. This looks like being one of the first version. Interesting that this tank ended in Rome!

Alexander ◊ 2007-10-09 01:03	I now know why this tank ended in Rome. It was a 'Brummbär' of the Sturmpanzer-Abteilung 216 (assault-tank battalion) which was active in Russia from June to December 1943. In December 1943 the remaining vehicles were transferred back to Germany for extensive repairs. After the Allied invasion in Italy in January 1944 the battalion was hastily sent there for counter measures, having 28 Sd.Kfz.166. More were added during the retreat of the troops and by April 1945 42 tanks were active. All these were either lost or abandoned during the final weeks of the war. Obviously some of the abandoned tanks were reactivated and probably served in the Italian army after the war. No further information is known to me about that.
