65-66. 67 models has a different c-pillar design. 68 models had a different door mirror design and hidden windshield wipers.

The alpha-numeric sequence of the CA license plate is incorrect for the period. CA plates in the mid-late 1960's had three letters followed by three numbers (there were no vanity plates back then).

That's standard procedure with fake plates in movies, so they don't duplicate somebody's real license number. It was discussed on /r/Tarantino that this car was also in Reservoir Dogs and is the director's own so I can see him not wanting his real license plate out there even if it's a distinctive car.

I had a '66 DeVille, the convertible. It was 19 feet, 8 inches long with a 429 V8 (340 hp).

They could've done a better job with the plates. The didn't have to mix letters and numbers like that. They could've kept the correct ABC123 format of the plates and still made them invalid. For example, the CA DMV does not use I, O, or Q as the first or third letter in a three-leter sequence. Jim Rockford's Firebird from "The Rockford Files" has the plate 853OKG, a realistic but invalid plate. In addition, the CA DMV does not use certain three-letter combinations. One such combination is GAT, which is frequently seen in movies and TV shows on the famous 2GAT123 plate.

According to IMDB, this is the same car as Mr. Blonde's car in Reservoir Dogs: /vehicle_28647-Cadillac-Coupe-DeVille-1966.html

Which is Michael Madsen's personal car, which he was kind enough to loan for production.

I mean, what young Hollywood star with any self respect in 1969 would drive a three year old Cadillac. With dry cracked steering wheel no less.

"This car, a 1966 Cadillac Coupe De Ville seen throughout the film, comes from the production with the VIN number J6216694, and a newly installed LS 6.0 crate engine with GM Turbo 400 transmission. In addition to its distinctive “Cape Ivory” yellow color and sharp tailfins, this vehicle’s amenities include new brakes, fuel lines, upholstery, and other components outfitted for the ease of the actors. Estimate: $45,000 - 55,000"

I'm reading the novelization right now, and it claims Rick Dalton's car was supposed to be a 1964 Cadillac Coupe de Ville. Guess Tarantino decided to use a '66 for the movie instead.

Maybe he was tasteful and realised the newer models didn't look as nice

Ehhh, if I was a young Hollywood star, I would love to drive a 2004 Acura MDX, but I guess it all comes down to preference, yeah? :D
