 The unmistakable main street of Telluride, CO is used. Interestingly enough it's not on the IMDb filming locations.

 I was tricked. Actually the main street is Ladysmith, British Columbia, Canada with the close proximity of the Rocky mountains in Telluride digitally put in the background. The location of the main character's cabin is near the Britannia Mine Museum that was used in the X-Files before its renovation. I visited there in the 90s and it was perfect as a filming location.
