![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 1977 made-for-TV biopic about the life and times of Senator Joseph McCarthy, infamous for putting forward highly publicized, unsubstantiated accusations of communists and Soviet sympathizers infiltrating the U.S. federal government and other institutions in the early 1950s, causing the infamous "red scare"/"red panic" of the era. Following the Army-McCarthy hearings of 1954 and the suicide of anti-McCarthyism Governor Lester C. Hunt, which dealt a serious blow to McCarthy's image, he was censured by the Senate. Up until his death in 1957 at the age of 48, McCarthy continued to rally against communism, socialism and liberalism. His caused of death was listed as "Hepatitis, acute, cause unknown", though historians have claimed that it may have been exacerbated or even caused by McCarthy's alcoholism. Peter Boyle plays Joseph McCarthy and Burgess Meredith plays Joseph Nye Welch, the U.S. Army's chief legal representative during the Army-McCarthy hearings. The title is based on a derogatory term for McCarthy, coming from his false claims that he was a tail-gunner during WWII. Despite this claim being known as false, it still depicts McCarthy as a tail gunner. Two-star mid-'30s sedan ![]() Set from 1927 to 1957 Airdate: February 6th, 1977 |
