 Yes, I've read that the critics stoned him for that and called the film a rip-off of "Le samourai".

 A very amateurish "Le Samouraï" in that case, that film is in another league. This is mostly an exercise in style, more a tribute than a rip-off. But still enjoyable, and Fassbinder's talent is obvious.
