I'm too young - I was still in short trousers at primary school when the 60s ended. But I bet we have a few ex-hippies amongst certain imcdbists from Englandshire. No names, but ....

I lived in Kilburn from September 1965, then moving to Harrow on the Hill. If you were an apprentice like I was and therefore short of money, it was just as grim as the pictures shown here. I could not afford the train fare home, about half a week's wages, too frequently, so I used to try to sleep as much as possible, apart from going to church in Quex Road on Sunday morning. The other blokes in the bedsit were all older than me, so better off, and we all used to keep away from the old woman on the ground floor who seemed to boil cabbage 7 days a week. The occasional trip out when I had saved up some cash helped, and I did the museums and the places of note, generally going on the tube. I then moved to Harrow renting a room off a colleague. Eventually I was able to finish my training in a place where I could live at home, it was a big company and so possible to get transferred.

As far as hippiness is concerned............I turned up for the office one Monday wearing my tweed suit and buff Hush Puppies to be called into the manager's office. "Mr fromstaffs, (not my real name) where is your office suit, why have you come to work dressed for the country?" "I'm sorry, Sir, it's at the dry cleaners, it will be ready tomorrow" "Try not to come to the office dressed for the country please." So if you think I might have been a hippy in the 60s think again.

Things were a bit more relaxed when I moved offices - sports coat and flannels some days!

I lived in South Norwood, SE20, for four months in 1959, commuting to Westminster in a 20-year-old Rover Twelve [P2]. I was lodging with relatives otherwise I couldn't have done it ... neither SE20 nor Westminster were particularly dismal, but some of the areas I travelled through on my various commuting routes were pretty grim. I had a cousin living in Walworth, SE17, and that was rather dire. At the end of the four months I was promoted (I was a civil servant) and transferred to a post in Birmingham, which was a longer but much easier commute - and I could use my Mum's Minor 1000.

Thank you for your kind comment, but it surely didn't seem very interesting at the time!

[:plusun] I wouldn't say it wasn't interesting, but my four months made me certain that, while it's a must to visit, I'd never live in London. In my youth I was lucky in having numerous relatives thereabouts.
