 For a low budget movie set in Pompeii Italy but filmed in the USA they needed European cars.

They probably raided the local Ford dealership that imported UK Fords at the time for most of the vehicles, Italian sedans as against sports cars would I guess would be a lot more of a problem to find. They did however use Renault Dauphines with some authenticity, which at least could be standing in for the Italian Alfa Romeo Dauphine versions.

 Even the Dauphines are out of place, since the Alfa Romeo Dauphine didn't start to be produced until June 1959...
