Though John Alton signs the (somptuous) cinematography, directed by Anthony Mann, is not exactly a film noir but rather some sort of modern western, or more simply a crime story. The plot is simple: working hand in hand —as bombasticly announced by the voice over in the first seconds of the movie— US and Mexican authorities are trying to enforce the law and prevent illegal migrations from Mexico to the USA. Agents Ricardo Montalban (for Mexico) and George Murphy (for the USA) will penetrate the underground net to get informations and distroy the organization smuggling poor braceros. But they'll have to fight hard. If some lines and actions seem sometimes puzzlingly naive (especially coming from the good side), they are counter-balanced by splendid photo, good action and pace, frightening violence. There is almost no dull moment here. And since a crime movie is good as far as the villains are good, here we are fully satisfied: Howard Da Silva and Charles McGraw, Alfonso Bedoya and Arnold Moss and even Jack Lambert (uncredited) (having here a hard and last time with Montalban) are exactly what we hope: mean to the bones. We are even treated with Lynn Whitney (McGraw's wife, uncredited!), who delivers to poor Montalban, caught unsuspicious, "I was brought up in the Panhandle and I can sure use this thing…", waving a .38 special. Certainly not a masterpiece but plenty of images and moments to justify the vision of this good action movie. Dear IMPDb.org, two little thngs for you : |
