For the film, the fictional town of Silent Hill is based on the town of Centralia, located in Pennsylvania, USA. Centralia was largely abandoned during the '80s, after a series of incidences involving an underground mine fire that ignited in 1962. In the early years of the fire, local residents enjoyed not having to shovel their sidewalks and being able to harvest fruits and vegetables from the warm ground in midwinter, this due to the underground heat generated by the fire. But as time progressed, the ground turned to ash, trees started dying and people started passing out in their homes from the toxic fumes. The fire continues to burn underground, releasing toxic fumes. The fire also plagues the area with unstable ground and causes sinkholes. Here is a photo of PA Route 61 which is (now closed to traffic) due to the ground collapsing underneath. Smoke and steam rise up out of the cracks: There is enough fuel in the mines for the underground fire to burn well into the future. Estimates state that the fire could burn for another 250 years. |
