but in some scenes its obvious that only the camera crew actually went to ireland to get some stock film footage..as most of the "speaking" scenes were filmed in the USA (the joys of a TV movie!!!)

I assume that Angela Lansbury was either unwilling or unable to travel to Ireland.

for some reason..quite a few of these "Murder She Wrote" episodes which take place outside of the USA are maily filmed with the main actors not actually being in the country in which its set..they bring in right hand drive vehicles and fit em with fake number plates..although lansbury did film a few scenes in Ireland (unavoidable, she had to be there)..the bulk of the Irish countryside scenes were probably done by a seperate camera crew, then intercut with the US filmed scenes..the pics of the vehicles parked on double yellow lines in the small village looks too "movie set" to be real.....you know some Americans (those whove never been outside their own country),actually do think that scotland looks like the movie "Brigadoon"......Irelands like the movie "The Quiet Man"..all us Brits talk with the same posh accent, wear bowler hats and are personal friends of the queen!!!...and if they film a scene in "Britain", they have to show a red double decker bus and a black taxi (no matter where in Britain its set)..apparently these sort of "product placements" are something to do with appealing to the US viewer.

Lots of closeups in this that are obviously Californian; the producers seem to think that everyone in Ireland rides a Lambretta...

I doubt she was unwilling to travel, she had place in Ireland I believe

Lansbury lived in Ireland for decades, and she actually did shoot some location stuff for the Celtic Riddle in Rathnew and Rathdrum. What it was was Universal being stingy (per usual). For years, she was trying to get them to shoot in England and Ireland, and every episode they'd go, 'eh, we can get a second unit and shoot some stuff and get some stock, and do the main stuff in Universal City'. And I think she was a bit miffed that Magnum PI, another Universal/CBS show which even had a crossover with MSW did go and shoot an episode entirely in England.
And for the Celtic Riddle, they basically said, 'Okay, okay, we'll shoot SOME stuff in Wicklow. But only a few days." Around that time, she did three other TVMs made in Ireland that were shot entirely or if not entirely, all the stuff set in Ireland was at least shot in Ireland (using studios here too). The Love she Sought (actually that was 1990, but still a mostly Irish production), the Blackwater Lightship and the Unforgettable Mrs. Polifax.
